IP Multimedia Subsystem Advanced Research Cluster for Services

IMS ARS is a research project where a group of academic partners perform research work on behalf of and directed by a group of commercial companies. The research work is openly available to the companies and academic partners ( collectively known as the project stakeholders ) to use and exploit as they see fit. The project is financed by Enterprise Ireland. The academic partners are lead by TSSG. The group of commercial companies are represented in the project by a Steering Group, who meet quarterly and direct the research focus of the academic partners.

What type of research work has IMS ARCS done?

The academic team have participated with the industry group to create a group of almost 30 distinct service concepts, which developed and analysed as part of an initial feasibility study. A subset of these services were selected as suitable prototype candidates and a number of these have been built and demonstrated. The IMS ARCS team had a stand at the MWC in Barcelona in February 2008, where some of these services were exhibited. The project uses the OpenIMS testbed from Fraunhofer Fokus as the as platform for testing the service prototypes.

The IMS ARCS team are developing a service enabler based architecture, based around a number of Open Source tools and middleware, with prototype enablers integrated with the OpenIMS testbed and the aforementioned services. The IMS ARCS team have also given a number of technical workshops to the commercial companies, demonstrating how to use the OpenIMS testbed and how to build and test a simple IMS application. The team have also attended a number of industry events and compiled reports for the stakeholder group giving industrial contact lists, updates on the business cases behind IMS, what operators are using IMS and for what purpose, and the important technological developments in the IMS marketplace.
