The Data Protection Acts 1988 and 2003 govern data protection in Ireland. The 1988 Act came fully into force on the 19th April, 1989.

The Data Protection Amendment Act 2003 was signed by the President of Ireland on 10 April 2003.  The Act transposes EU Directive 95/46/EC into Irish Law.

Amongst the major changes introduced by this legislation are the extension of data protection rules to manual records; 
improvements in the right of access and new rules in relation to the fair obtaining and fair processing of data.
